Inspired by the indigenous history of the Borrego Valley and the present-day context of Seley Ranches’ blossoming citrus trees, Sherin Guirguis brings to life a sculptural and sonic offering that connects desert communities across the globe.

Sherin Guirguis’ work A’aru is inspired by the indigenous history of the Borrego Valley and the present-day context of the blossoming citrus trees of Seley Ranches. Its title references an ancient Egyptian paradisial afterlife, a field of offerings that is an idealized sphere parallel to and extending the normal plane of existence. It is a sculptural and sonic offering that connects desert communities across the globe, linking sacred music and reverence for nature in an installation that encourages contemplation. A’aru focuses us on the relationships between land, people, animals, and plants — a visual, aural, and aromatic prompt to reassess our place in the world around us.
